Different Types of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is mainly a group of eye disease and quite misunderstood one as well. Sometimes people are unable to realize the severity as it has no symptoms.

Some of the facts about Glaucoma are;

  1. 10% of all the people who get Glaucoma treatment, unfortunately, still get their vision lost.
  2. This disease can only be treated, if detected in the initial stages. Otherwise, there is no way to cure Glaucoma.
  3. Whether its babies or senior citizens, both are at risk of Glaucoma. Older people are more likely to get affected by this disease.
  4. Glaucoma cannot be detected without any eye examination since it has no symptoms. Perhaps that’s the reason of why it’s known to be amongst the leading causes of blindness.

Since Glaucoma itself is a group of diseases, there are several types of Glaucoma Disease, of which, let’s check out the major ones;

Open Angle Glaucoma:

This is the most common form of Glaucoma that is found in most of the affected people. In fact, 90% of all the Glaucoma cases lie under the umbrella of Open-Angle Type. It is mainly caused by the slow clogging in the drainage canals, which results in increasing eye pressure. People suffering from this particular type of Glaucoma have wide and open angle between cornea and iris. The most highlighted attribute of Open Angle Glaucoma is that it develops slowly and has damage and symptoms that are not noticed.

Angle Closure Glaucoma:

This particular Glaucoma type is not very common but the damage cannot be neglected anyway. Angle Closure Glaucoma is caused by blocked drainage canals, which eventually results in a sudden rise in intraocular pressure. It develops very quickly and has narrow angle between cornea and iris. Specifically for this type of Glaucoma, the symptoms and damages are noticeable that needs an immediate medical attention.

Normal Tension Glaucoma:

NTG stands for Normal-Pressure Glaucoma and Low-Tension Glaucoma. In this particular state, the optic never is damage but still the pressure upon eye is not really high. This is still no less than a puzzle for medical science as they have not yet been able to figure out this ambiguity. This question is still being worked upon and experts are trying hard to find an answer to why some people still have that almost normal pressure levels even after having a damaged optic nerve.

Congenital Glaucoma

It only occurs in babies as it’s a result of incomplete or incorrect development of eye drainage canals in babies. It mostly occurs in prenatal period, when a human embryo and (afterwards) fetus is developed during pregnancy. This condition is very much inherited. In that case, micro surgery can be helpful, which helps in fixing the structural defects. Not all the Congenital Glaucoma cases need microsurgery as some of the case can be treated with medication.

Glaucoma has many other types as well but the mentioned above are the major ones that are mostly detected from the patients affected.
